Joe was the believed to be the oldest known Holocaust survivor in Colorado.— Author Nancy Sprowell Geise
Icek Jakub Rubinsztejn ”Joe Rubinstein” was born on September 16, 1920 in Radom, Poland. After Germany invaded Poland, Joe and his family were sent to the Radom Ghetto in 1941.
Two weeks later, Joe was taken from the ghetto and sent to several concentration camps. Joe never saw his family again. His widowed mother, Reska, his older brother, Dawid, Joe’s identical twin, Chaim, his younger brother, Abram, and younger sister, Laja, were all believed murdered at the Treblinka Death camp following the “liquidation” of the Radom Ghetto in 1942.
“It is my deepest prayer,” said Nancy Sprowell Geise, author of the award-winning book about his life, Auschwitz #34207 - The Joe Rubinstein Story, “that at this moment Joe is in the loving embrace of his beloved family. Although he survived decades without them, they never were far from his thoughts and heart. Even at the age of 101, Joe could not speak of them without weeping.”
Throughout his life, Joe defied the odds. He went on, not only to survive several of the most notorious Nazi concentration camps, including over two years at Auschwitz/Birkenau, but to live a long, productive, and joy-filled life. Joe and his bride, Irene, moved to the United States in 1949. Joe would become one of New York City’s leading shoe designers, working for such iconic companies as Korkease Shoes, Herbert Levine Shoes, Nina Shoes, Gelbrow Shoes, and later in California for Sbicca of California and Cherokee of California.
Joe’s philosophy of living so long: “Eat right, exercise every day and help each other. That’s what I did.”
Geise said, “For nearly 70 years Joe never told anyone about his story because he did not think anything good could come of it. After the book about his life was published, Joe was deeply touched by the many letters and feedback he got from people around the world telling him that if he found a way to live a joy-filled life after losing all he did, then they knew they could find a way to face their troubles."
Geise is grateful that Joe finally decided to tell his story so that his family of origin will never be forgotten. "He became a voice for many who perished in the Holocaust and did not live to share their stories."
“He was an inspiration to so many,” Geise said. “He will continue to be an inspiration for future generations about not giving in to despair and not turning to darkness. Instead, Joe saw the best in people. He lived into the idea of how we each have a choice in how we respond to adversity. Joe chose joy.”
Joe is survived by his wife, Irene, of 74 years, a son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
On his 100th birthday, the City of Fort Collins, Colorado, declared the day “Joe Rubinstein Day."
Geise said, "Joe told me in one of the last conversations I had with him, that every day he thanks God that he is alive, but that he is ready when God calls him home. Joe loved to remind people that life is precious and that we should never give up on it. I am grateful that he never did."

SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, June 20, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The magnitude and urgency of challenges associated with the disposal of plastic pots is acknowledged by both governments and industry around the world, and whilst several initiatives, such as the EU's approach of "Re-think plastics" and refund strategies are currently being actively pursued, the fact remains that very little progress has been made towards finding and implementing sustainable solutions based on appropriate technologies. Consequentially, the bulk of agricultural planting containers, made of low-quality plastics, continue to be discarded in landfills or incinerated.
Dr Aharon Arakel, the director and chief technologist of Pact Renewables said, “Our mineral-based planting containers, collectively known as dPOT planting containers, offer wide-ranging applications from household gardening to horticulture, reforestation and mine site land rehabilitation, and we are pleased to coincide our announcement with World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, that we celebrated on 17 June, and highlights the need for increasing resilience of agricultural practices in many drought impacted regions and countries, whilst reducing the use of plastic planting containers burdened with high life cycle costs.
Dr Arakel went on to say, “As we announced in our January press release, we have over a number of years developed, systematically assessed, and confirmed the applicability of our mineral-based composites technology for the production of degradable feedstock for manufacture of plantable containers. An overriding objective which we have now largely achieved is generating a microenvironment within these degradable containers that offers high water retention capacity for healthy and uninterrupted plant growth, from seeding to mature plant stage. We have found that having a seedling pot with the ability to provide a controlled pH and a low watering frequency requirement is ideal for healthy plant growth in remote areas, whether it is an arid zone or a mine site requiring rehabilitation; and we believe that our seedling pots are the right solutions for such applications. This has necessitated undertaking a rigorous product performance assessment program, using a variety of prototypes of seedling pots and self-watering pots that incorporate old plastic pots as outer lining, as well as pots for growing herbs and flowers that thrive in certain soil pH ranges. Based on our findings earlier this year, we finalised the micro-engineering design of the products for various market segments before completing the related techno-economic evaluations. I am now pleased to announce that commencing from July this year the dPOT seedling pots, as our introductory product line in both standard and nutrient enriched versions for domestic use in Australia, will be available through our affiliated business arm, dCore Australia.”

The initiative started with the establishment of TROM Computers CIC at the beginning of the pandemic in 2019.
The primary reason for pausing is slow adoption by private benefactors and lack of support from UK Government's Department of Employment and Labour. The project's commercial model is based on income that comes entirely from donations, and a main component is a target projection of government funding in line with current unemployment benefit payments. The government essentially pays for people to work with TROM Computers while job searching.
As a fundamental principle of the project, the TROM Computers staff are paid in a reward-for-effort model where value generated by the project is distributed among people involved, in direct proportion to their individual contributions. Each person records their contribution as 'time chunks' in a web-accessible database where each 'chunk' consists of date, duration and narrative of what is done. There is no distinction between grades of staff, and all value generated is distributed, so there is no mechanism in the share scheme for any one individual in the project to become wealthy from the project, but opportunity in the project for many staff to gain significantly more than they would on a minimum wage assignment or from government handout.
"This method of sharing has proven a very difficult concept to understand because it is far from what is 'normal' in commercial structures," says Nishanth Shiraj, web applications specialist, "It is only since I experienced a share out myself that I came to fully understand the concept. Concerns for which it is abundantly evident that Politicians are unable to solve, except for when additional effort is expended to harness the power of the Community Concerns initiative that is a core element of the TROM Computers project.
A priority target for TROM Computers when it re-emerges with full funding, is to implement the Community Concerns initiative by infiltration of local County Councils and Parish Councils and disrupting their bureaucratic operations. Motivation to join Local Councils is in many cases not by genuine interest in resolving community problems, but by self interest and usually related to personal financial gain. As recorded in TROM Computers history when acquisition of public building for use as local premises was filibustered out of the Burnham Town Council agenda in 2020.
When the TROM Computers project is underway, government policy that sustains a condition of below-poverty-line existence for recipients of social benefits, will be challenged. As an alternative to current policy, benefits recipients will be offered the opportunity to work on the TROM Computers Community Concerns project, utilising their input and at the same time providing them with incentive for self improvement.
"The main lesson we can learn from our largely unsuccessful start-up, is to accept that the money game is played always for personal gain and hardly ever for community development,' says David Winter, TROM Computers founder, "No politician or local councillor in the current social system is ever going to promote community development unless it involves some kind of personal advantage."
During the down time of TROM Computers operations, trials will be conducted on a small scale experiment using donations that individuals make in any case for parties considered of worth in community development.
